Baby & Newborn Photography

Congratulations on expecting a baby or maybe just have welcomed a new one into the world!!! As I watch my own children grow and see bits of their babyhood slip away day by day, I realize how much I increasingly treasure the images of their earliest stages. The little baby rolls, chubby cheeks and dimpled fingers, the sweet delicate eyelashes, and of course the adorable gummy smiles–if we could only freeze time, or at least slow it down just a bit! Looking back at my children’s newborn photographs it is hard to believe they could ever have been so small and sweet.

It amazes me how the power of a photograph can bring you back to a special time, to remember the smells and the sounds of a moment you wished had lasted a little longer. My goal during a newborn photo session is to capture these special details so that the memory of the littlest ones in their littlest stages can be preserved forever.

I want your newborn photography session to be as relaxed and enjoyable as possible although I understand how chaotic the first few days and weeks of your new babies life can seem. I want to make things as easy as possible for you, so prior to your session we will discuss props, dressings, etc. and I am happy to bring along anything I have that you would like to use. Generally, I will meet you in the convenience of your own home at a time that works best for you, and you can use the session as a special time to focus on and connect with your newest addition.

There are generally two very different styles of baby and newborn photography:
The Posed Approach The first style is be a more staged approach and involves posing the newborns by themselves in curled up positions with props after lulling them into a deep sleep. The images have a quiet, peaceful feel as the focus is solely on the newborn and the newborn takes on positions that most closely resemble how they may have been in the womb. The most famous imagery of this type that people may be familiar with are by Anne Geddes.
The Lifestyle Approach This second approach involves capturing the first special moments of interaction and love that a family experiences together. While there are almost always several images of the baby by themselves, the real focus here are the special intimate relationships between the baby with her mother, father, and siblings. These images tend to be more natural and emotive and they are almost always taken in the intimacy of a client’s home.

Although I am capable of capturing both types of newborn imagery, my person preference and style leans more toward the lifestyle newborn photography approach. In my personal opinion, they feel more honest and special. That being said, I almost always try to give my newborn photo session clients a good mix of both styles of newborn photography when it is possible to do so.

If you are most interested in the posed newborn photography approach, it is very important that you book your session in advance so that the session can take place within the first week of life. In order to achieve many of the delicate poses, the newborn photos need to be taken before the baby has gone through any growth spurts and while they still retain the flexibility and other characteristics of being brand new. Success with these types of photos is ultimately dependent on a babies ability to fall asleep and remain in a deep sleep, which usually isn’t a problem in the first few days although I do have a handful of tricks if this becomes problematic.

If you are most interested in the lifestyle newborn photography approach , the age of your baby isn’t as critical since curled up poses and a deeply sleeping baby aren’t absolutely necessary. That being said, you may wish to book the newborn session sooner rather than later simply because newborns change into infants and older babies so fast, and the delicate newborn details can never be recovered once they are gone. (You will be amazed how quickly they change–many of the newborn features seem to fade away within a few days to a week!). For these types of shoots I have had mothers in the past who have been self conscious of taking pictures so soon after a babies birth–Please be assured that I have tools at my disposal to make you look as beautiful as possible, and I take significant time and effort with each image individually make sure all of my clients look their absolute best. Please let me know if this is on your mind and we will walk you through how I can help with these types of concerns. I’m a mom too, so i know how it goes. :)
